Suggest a new name for Victory Community Park
Have your say about changing the name of Victory Community Park, by taking this short survey.
Local people have asked the council to consider changing the name of the park. A new name could have stronger links to the local area and local community.
This is your chance to have your say about renaming the park. Do you have a new name to suggest?
The Friends of Victory Community Park have researched the history of Victory Community Park and the local area and kindly shared their research with the council.
Before the city of London was built, the local area was marshland with a waterway called the Lock Stream. The area used to get flooded often, but there were areas of dry ground and parts of the marsh were reclaimed and used for grazing animals; local people called these dry areas “Lock’s Fields”.
By the early 1700s, central London's population was increasing, and wild areas were built upon. The New Kent Road was built in 1751 and over the next 150 years, increasing industrialisation and more housing meant that the last remaining natural landscape disappeared.
In the 1970s, Southwark Council’s Environment Programme transformed derelict and bomb-damaged sites so they could be used by the community. The local community campaigned for Victory Community Park to be created and named it after a nearby road called “Victory Place”.
