Tanner Street to Willow Walk Cycle Route

UPDATE July 2026:

The Tanner Street to Willow Walk Cycle Scheme is currently on hold as we finalise funding arrangements. We hope to receive confirmation of funding from TfL for delivery next Financial Year (2027-28).

Because the Druid Street section is funded via a separate budget these proposals were progressed to Statutory Consultation and got the go ahead to be implemented in February this year (see record of the decision here). Construction has been programmed for January 2027 to limit disruption to hospitality venues.

Southwark Council is improving walking and cycling routes as part of Streets for People, our ambitious plan to improve the air we breathe and the way we travel in Southwark.

We are planning to put in a new cycle route from Tanner Street to Willow Walk, to link existing major TfL routes C10 and C14 in Bermondsey. The proposal is currently at the outline design stage and is planned for construction next year, 2025, pending consultation and approval.

The proposed Route Alignment

We would like to hear from affected residents and local businesses, and those who travel though the area to feed in to the design for both cycling and walking improvements.

Tanner Street to Willow Walk Cycle Route - Consultation

6 September 2024 23:00 - 21 October 2024 23:00

In this phase of we are asking for feedback on designs for the new proposed cycle route between Tanner Street (TfL Cycleway 14) and Willow Walk (TfL Cycleway 10). It includes changes to the temporary scheme installed on Druid Street and Gedling Place.

In the recent Streets for People surveys in this area, you told us that 59% currently cycle/scoot or walk as your main form of transport. Only a third of households own a vehicle in this area. And 39% said you would be interested in trying cycling (or cycling more).

The proposed scheme aims to overcome perceived obstacles to cycling by creating a safer route which is on a north/south desire line away from busier roads and simplifying junctions to make it suitable for cycling by all ages.

In addition to the cycling improvements we also propose to widen and declutter existing pavements as well as providing a new pavement on Druid Street to make it safer and easier to walk and wheel.

The online consultation survey will open Friday 6th September until 5th October to allow residents, businesses and anyone else affected by the changes to have their say and comment on the designs.
