St Joseph's RC Primary School Street - North Bermondsey

Tell us what you think about plans for a camera-controlled 'School Street' in the streets around St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School. The proposed scheme also includes streets next to St Michael's Catholic College.

We have developed plans for a 'School Street' on George Row, Flockton Street, Sugar Lane, East Lane, Llewellyn Street and part of Scott Lidgett Crescent.

Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through this section of road during school opening and closing hours (around an hour each morning and afternoon). There would be exemptions for:-

• emergency services
• residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
• registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
• Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit

We recently consulted on proposals for a school street on Bevington Street, to protect pupils at Riverside Primary School. Therefore we are also including Bevington Street residents and parents/carers/staff at Riverside in this consultation, so they are aware of the extent of the proposed timed closures. We intend that these will remain separate schemes, but we are planning to align the hours of operation to avoid confusion.

Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling.

We are keen to hear from residents and businesses on the affected streets and the surrounding roads, as well as from parents and teachers at St Joseph's, St Michael's and Riverside, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.
