Proposed new cycle hangars - Winter 2025
Southwark Council is consulting on our latest batch of proposed cycle hangar locations. This is part of our Streets for People plan, which sets out how we will make our streets cleaner, greener and safer. This includes creating a network of safe and accessible walking and cycling routes and providing places for people to store their bikes.
Our cycle hangar waiting list across the borough shows high levels of demand and we have now installed over 850 cycle hangars with over 5,000 bike spaces. We aim to have installed more than 1,000 hangars (providing over 6,000 spaces) by the end of March 2026.
We would like to hear your views on the locations proposed. If you live next to one of the locations, you will receive a letter in the post.
Each bike hangar has room for 6 cycles and is accessed using a unique key (although, for additional security we always advise users to lock their cycle to the rack inside the hangar).
Each hangar will replace a single car parking space. This is part of the council’s commitment to supporting healthier forms of travel.

A space in the hangar is available for rent for £60 incl. VAT per annum and a refundable deposit of £35 will also be charged for the hangar key. The rental system is operated by the council. Anyone who registers an interest in securing a space will be added to the priority list.
Please note - if none of the locations in this phase are relevant to you, you can still nominate locations for future installations at our survey page - suggest locations
We are working hard to install hangars in as many locations as possible that people have requested - but we know demand still outstrips supply, and we request your patience.
