Peckham Rye Gyratory bus improvements
Southwark Council is working with Transport for London (TfL) to improve walking, cycling and public transport routes as part of Streets for People, our ambitious plan to improve the air we breathe and the way we travel in Southwark.
We have an opportunity to rethink the transport priorities on the Peckham Rye Gyratory from Rye Lane to East Dulwich Road. The scheme has TfL bus improvements funding to deliver
- Improved bus journey reliability
- Improved cycling and walking routes
- Reduce traffic on Peckham Rye (east) & on nearby school streets
- Improved road safety
- Provide public realm improvements
In our recent Streets for People surveys, you told us that you wanted less traffic, pavement improvements, decluttering, more trees and green spaces. We would like to hear from directly affected residents and businesses, who have the opportunity to improve the gyratory area for all methods of transport. Please tell us what you like about the proposals, what you dislike about the proposals and what should be our priorities for the scheme?
We are now engaging with residents to listen to their issues and hear their thoughts on our proposed outline design.
Phases
Peckham Rye Gyratory Bus Improvements - Consultation
In this phase we are asking for feedback on draft designs for the changes to transport provision on Peckham Rye, between Rye Lane and East Dulwich Road. It includes removal of the temporary kerbed cycle lanes installed on Peckham Rye East.
Our plans include restricting access on the east side of Peckham Rye Common by introducing a new ‘bus gate’. This would restrict general traffic except for buses, cycles and service vehicles (e.g. bin lorries). The bus gate will make bus journeys quicker and create a better environment for walking and cycling. A northbound bus lane is also proposed between Dewar Street and Nigel Road, to operate during peak periods (7am - 10am and 3pm - 7pm).
We are also proposing to close Scylla Road to create an extension of the existing School Street on Whorlton Road. This is proposed to be a permanent closure to reduce traffic outside Rye Oak school and make it safer for parents and pupils to walk, cycle, or wheel to school. Access will be maintained for emergency services at all times.
The proposed scheme aims to overcome perceived obstacles to cycling by creating a safer route which is on a north/south desire line away from busier roads and simplifying junctions to make it suitable for cycling by all ages.
In addition to the bus and cycling improvements we also propose to widen and declutter existing pavements to make it safer and easier to walk and wheel. Five new zebra crossings are proposed within the scheme extents, many of these on popular routes to schools, and where these are on cycle routes they have been upgraded for use by cyclists as well.
