Highshore Special School Expansion
Southwark Council and Highshore School are seeking your views on proposals to expand the Highshore Special School.
It’s no secret that the number of children with special educational needs is increasing everywhere in the country, and the same is happening in Southwark. For too many children, this can often mean having to go to independent schools that are outside of Southwark, with long travel journeys, which isn’t always the best thing for our children.
The council is committed to making sure more of our pupils who need special school places can go to school closer to home. This means working in partnership with our successful local schools, where it’s the right thing to do, to create more places.
Phases
Statutory Consultation
The proposed second premises for the school will be the whole site of the Comber Grove Primary School, that closed last year. The site is less than half a mile away from the current Highshore site - about an 8-minute walk. This means the two sites will be able to share resources and have a fantastic integrated offer for all of our children.
All being well, we hope to be able to open the new second site for the start of September 2026. This will involve a full refurbishment, modernisation and redesign of the buildings to make sure they are right for children's needs.
We invite any interested party to let us know their thoughts. A survey is available below and will remain open until Monday 5th May 2025. Paper copies of the survey will also be made available at the current school.
Documents giving you a bit more background information on the current plans are available for download below.
