Dulwich Hill School Street Proposal
Revised scheme - consultation from 16 May 2025 (see Phase 2 below)
We recently consulted on proposals for a school street in the Dulwich Hill area, to provide reduced traffic and safer streets at key times around St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Primary School and Goodrich Primary School.
We know from our conversations with the schools that this is a very important scheme to help make local pupils safer at drop-off and pick-up times, and to support parents in choosing healthier ways to travel to and from school – in line with the council’s Streets for People strategy. However, when we spoke to residents, a number of concerns were raised about the proposals.
After listening to these concerns, we have made some major changes to the plans, which we think will provide a better balance between resident needs and child safety:-
- There will now be two separate school street schemes, one for each school (see the colour-coded map). Residents will be able to apply for a permit for the scheme on their street.
- The hours of the proposed school streets have been adjusted to better fit the start and end times of the schools.
- The Goodrich scheme will no longer extend beyond the junction of Mount Adon Park and Dunstans Road – residents on Mount Adon Park and the southern section of Upland Road will not need permits to use those roads and for access to Lordship Lane.
- We are proposing to include a small section of Goodrich Road (outside the school entrance) within the scheme, in order to prevent cars from queueing along this part of the road
- The proposed bus gate on Friern Road has been amended to allow permit holders access from Lordship Lane.
- We would like to thank all those residents who took part in the first phase of the consultation by responding online or attending the drop-in session – your feedback was immensely valuable in helping us improve the project.
Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through this section of road during school opening and closing hours (up to an hour each morning and afternoon). There would be exemptions for:-
- emergency services
- residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
- registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
- Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit)
- additionally, public buses will still be able to access Friern Road as part of their normal routes.
Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling.
We are keen to hear from residents and businesses in the Dulwich Hill area, as well as from parents and teachers at St Anthony's Primary School and Goodrich Primary School, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.
