Proposed closure of Charlotte Sharman Primary School

Southwark Council is consulting on a proposal to close Charlotte Sharman Primary School in Borough.

Charlotte Sharman Primary School is a one-form entry (1FE) foundation primary school, situated in in the council's St George's ward. For place planning purposes, the school is situated in Council’s “Planning Area 1” (PA1) – Borough, Bankside & Walworth.

The school was, until 2019, a 2FE primary school (PAN of 60), when, due to falling rolls, the published admissions number (PAN) at Charlotte Sharman was reduced by 60 to 30.

Rolls have remained low at the school for some time, and reception recruitment over the last 6 years has fallen some way short of 30.

Vacancy levels at the school overall have remained high at the school. Reception numbers fell to 12 in 2024-25 and are estimated to remain at a similar level (or lower) in 2025-26 and for the foreseeable future. As school funding is based on the number of children on roll, resources available for the school are reducing.

It is for this reason the Council are considering a range of options for the future of the school, including permanent closure. This consultation will allow us to evaluate these options and the effects of closure
