Complete Surveys and Read Feedback Here

Southwark Council has made a promise to establish a modern Centre for Black African and Caribbean Seniors run by and for the community.

Initial feedback has highlighted a need to take a collaborative approach before any key decisions are made.

So, we are reaching out to better understand how this commitment can meet the well-being needs of Black seniors across the borough.

Thank-you for taking the time to get involved with this important project. Please talk about it with your friends and family, and share this link with anyone you think might be interested in expressing their thoughts or ideas: (136) Folder: Centre for Black African & Caribbean Elders | London Borough of Southwark

Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Southwark Black seniors: Let’s talk about well-being survey.

The consultation was open from May 2024 and closed at the end of November 2024 and we had 65 respondents from across Southwark who shared their views. In addition to the online consultation, we carried out face to face meetings at different services working with older Black people across the borough.

This is a summary of what you told us:

·      You want a centre that caters to the cultural, well-being and social needs of Black seniors in Southwark.

·      You want people who understand the diversity of the different Black communities across Southwark to run it.

·      You want improved access to healthcare services including culturally sensitive healthcare providers.

·      You want intergenerational activities that reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of Black seniors.

·      You want opportunities for lifelong learning and volunteering to provide people with a sense of purpose and belonging.

·      You want good transport services to the centre including dedicated pick-up and drop-off points.

·      You want a centre that welcomes members of all ethnic backgrounds, while keeping the needs of Black seniors at its heart.

Next steps:

1.   We are continuing to consult so we can better understand the services and facilities you want to see delivered from the centre and to ensure we hear from as many people from all parts of the borough as possible. Please look out for in-person opportunities and Phase 3 of the online consultation.

2.   We are seeking committed and enthusiastic individuals to join the Southwark Black Elders Centre Working Group. This group will play a vital role in creating a centre that honours the cultural, social, and physical needs of Black elders in Southwark highlighted in the initial consultation.
