Belham Primary School Street
*Consultation on revised design due late January 2026 - see Phase 2 below*
Tell us what you think about plans for a camera-controlled 'School Street' area around Belham Primary School.
We have worked with Belham Primary School to develop plans for a 'School Street' area. The area would cover Danby Street, Sandison Street and sections of Bellenden Road and Maxted Road - this is to ensure that unsafe levels of traffic are not diverted onto streets around the school.
Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through these sections of road during school opening and closing hours (up to an hour each morning and afternoon). There would be exemptions for:-
- public buses, and taxis
- emergency services
- residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
- carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
- Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit
Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling. We are keen to hear from residents and businesses within the proposed zone, as well as from parents and teachers at Belham Primary School, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.
