We are proposing to put the existing zebra crossing and junction on a raised surface – providing a better crossing surface and encouraging vehicles to reduce speed on approach to the crossing.

We are also proposing to widen a section of pavement on the western side of Asylum Road and add pavement buildouts around trees to provide more space for pedestrians and encourage reduced speeds.

We are also proposing planting beds and seating to allow people somewhere to sit on their journeys and enable cleaner healthier streets - these planting beds will also help rainwater drain more easily in the event of local flooding.

To enable this, we would remove 5 shared use permit holder and pay by phone parking bays and 3 permit holders only bays from Asylum Road. We are also proposing a raised, continuous pavement over both entrances to Caroline Gardens.

Streets for People is our plan to transform our streets, enabling safer, cleaner, healthier and more sustainable journeys, creating space for communities to connect and socialise and support a thriving local economy.

We carried out borough-wide engagement in 2023-4, and local residents identified this section of Asylum Road as a place where the road was difficult to cross and speeding cars could be an issue.

There are many older residents in the immediate area, and we need to ensure they are safe and have good access to the pavements and public transport.
