Creating a Calmer, More Welcoming Camberwell: Noise Reduction Initiatives

Camberwell is steadily evolving into a vibrant and welcoming neighbourhood, supported by a thriving mix of independent shops, bars, cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. There is a clear opportunity to build on this momentum by fostering a more village-like atmosphere—one that encourages people to spend time outdoors, enjoy local spaces such as Camberwell Green, and support community initiatives like the Camberwell Green Market, along with small businesses offering outdoor seating. One significant challenge to this vision is the high level of noise along Camberwell Road, New Road, and Church Street. Frequent sirens from emergency vehicles—combined with traffic noise and vehicles with modified exhausts—create a hectic environment that can feel overwhelming. In a city where many residents already experience high levels of stress, it is increasingly important to shape neighbourhoods that offer moments of calm, comfort, and connection. While the vital role of emergency services is fully recognised, there may be scope to explore carefully considered adjustments—such as lower siren volumes during low-traffic hours or in highly pedestrianised zones, and more restrained use of sirens—to reduce noise without compromising public safety.Additionally, banning vehicles with modified exhausts that contribute disproportionately to noise pollution, alongside measures such as installing speed bumps to discourage speeding and excessive noise from modified cars, would further support a quieter, more pleasant environment.Reducing excessive noise would support a calmer, more people-friendly town centre and help strengthen Camberwell’s growing appeal as a place to live, work, and gather.
Excessive Night-time Bus Idling and Parking on Camberwell Road

Every night, dozens of empty buses are parked along Camberwell Road, near Camberwell Green, between the main junction and the stop past Medlar Street. Many of these buses keep their engines running for long periods, and drivers often accelerate to test the engines. This creates significant noise late at night and regularly disrupts the sleep of residents living in the nearby flats. It appears that the bus depot cannot accommodate the number of buses within its facilities, so engine testing and idling are being carried out on the street instead. This has become a regular occurrence. The situation also creates traffic and safety issues. Buses are frequently parked on both sides of the road, reducing visibility and road space. There have already been several motorbike accidents involving buses in the area that appear to be linked to these obstructions. In addition, the constant movement of buses in and out of the depot creates a dangerous situation for pedestrians at the depot entrance, where the pavement is interrupted as multiple buses enter and exit.Overall, the location and size of the depot appear inadequate for the volume of buses operating from it. Given that this is a residential area next to a park, with many flats overlooking the depot and bus stops, the current situation is causing significant disturbance and safety concerns that do not appear to be adequately addressed.
