Too many buses parked at night with engines running

From "Better Bus Southwark Section 2 - Elephant and Castle to Camberwell"

Go to the project

Every night, dozens of empty double/decker buses are parked along Camberwell Road, in front of Camberwell Green park, between the main junction and the stop past Medlar Street. Many of these buses keep their engines running for long periods, and drivers often accelerate to test the engines. This creates significant noise late at night and regularly disrupts the sleep of residents living in the nearby flats.

It appears that the bus depot cannot accommodate the number of buses within its facilities, so engine testing and idling are being carried out on the street instead. This has become a regular occurrence.

The situation also creates traffic and safety issues. Buses are frequently parked on both sides of the road, reducing visibility and road space. There have already been several motorbike accidents involving buses in the area that appear to be linked to these obstructions.

In addition, the constant movement of buses in and out of the depot creates a dangerous situation for pedestrians at the depot entrance, where the pavement is interrupted as multiple buses enter and exit.

Overall, the location and size of the depot appear inadequate for the volume of buses operating from it. Given that this is a residential area next to a park, with many flats overlooking the depot and bus stops, the current situation is causing significant disturbance and safety concerns that do not appear to be adequately addressed.

Totally agree with everything that has been said here. The buses that are regularly left idling on the road are causing traffic jams late at night, with frustrated drivers honking their horns while trying to get through. Meanwhile I’m lying in bed hoping the chaos will stop so I can fall back asleep. The council needs to address this issue directly with TfL and properly assess the negative impact the bus garage is having on local residents, who are having to endure this noise and disruption on a regular basis.
