The Film Crew - Film As Therapy

From "THINC Fund Vote: Large Projects (£25,000-£50,000)"

Go to the project

'The Film Crew: Film As Therapy' will deliver a series of screenings for Peckham SE15 residents of short films by local filmmakers and feature length International and Award winning films with Q&A's hosted by local therapists and the filmmakers themselves. Our aim is to create a space where we the community can come together and discuss our own life experiences through cinema as a form of communal therapy. By bringing some of the best of world cinema to our community whilst also highlighting local talent and sharing personal stories from our residents we can see the value of our own stories. Curating the collective experience of cinema and giving our community a space to share thoughts and feelings from the themes of the films as a way of healing and therapy is our ultimate goal.

What we will deliver:

  • Screening award winning films across the year
  • Free Cinema and Access to Peckham Residents
  • Group Therapy Sessions for Peckham Residents through cinema

Who’s it for:

Black, Asian and people of ethnic decent adults, this also includes people on low income as well people with living with multiple health conditions and those with immigration issues. Our focus is on supporting people from all walks but our priority is for these people to benefit first within in our community.

Why it’s important:

The difference this will make is by harnessing the power of cinema and community to help relieve some of the mental health issues people in our community have around anxiety, isolation and depression and by bringing people together through cinema we can begin to engage and share in a way that may not seem as difficult. These are issues that people often suffer in silence with.

How the funding will help:

Your vote and the funding of £48,500 for our program to run across 2026 will help our community by creating a safe space open for Peckham’s residents to come and share in the power of cinema to overcome mental health challenge’s they may have as well as:

  • Community cohesion
  • Funding free community therapy
  • Funding Free Cinema experiences
  • Giving a voice to those not often heard
  • Bringing world cinema for free to Peckham residents
  • Highlighting and Promoting the Filmmaking Talent that exists in Peckham
  • Art and community engagement.

Why this will be a success:

Because you, people from Peckham, will have voted for us. And ultimately because this is a project that is for us and by us. Having run similar programs before our Founder & Program Director, Adeyemi Michael is an established filmmaker from Peckham and has successfully delivered community programs for over 20 years in the area. So with that we believe that we have the required know how to deliver such a program for the needs of those within our community.

Throughout 2026 we look forward to seeing SE15’s Peckham residents at Film & Therapy. We are excited to share laughs, tears, films and our stories together. See you in the cinema.
