Queens Road, Peckham is no longer fit for purpose and should be redesigned as part of the wider Peckham Square changes. The current layout wastes valuable street space, with oversized central reservations and underused crossings on a road now limited to 20mph.
General
The large central reservations and crossing islands are not appropriate for a road limited to 20mph. That space would be far better used for fully segregated cycle lanes or other active travel improvements that make the street safer and more efficient. The whole corridor would also benefit from more trees, hedges, and softer landscaping, helping to reduce the harsh road environment and create a better-quality public realm.
Peckham Hill Street Junction
The Peckham Hill Street junction is especially poor, for example'
- Pavements are very narrow,
- The signal arrangement feels illogical, and
- Safety for pedestrians is compromised.
- Relocating the traffic lights and rationalising the junction would improve traffic flow, reduce conflict, and create a safer, greener public realm.
Queens Road Station Area
The area around Queens Road station to Beer Rebellion has become a lively day-and-night food and drink destination, with attractive outdoor seating and strong footfall. This section would benefit from additional planting, hedges, and soft landscaping to improve the experience, create a more pleasant sense of enclosure, and provide some screening from traffic. Greening would also help soften the streetscape, reduce the dominance of the road, and offer a small buffer against noise and pollution.
