Re: Feedback for Better Bus Southwark – Bus Route 468
I welcome the opportunity to contribute feedback to the Better Bus Southwark initiative being undertaken by Southwark Council in partnership with Transport for London.
As a regular passenger on bus route 468, which runs from Elephant and Castle through Camberwell and West Norwood to South Croydon, I have experienced persistent reliability problems over several years and have previously raised complaints regarding the service.
This route serves a vital corridor linking Southwark and Croydon and is relied upon by commuters, students, and residents. However, the service is frequently undermined by delays, diversions, prolonged driver changeovers, and buses stopping for extended periods to regulate service intervals. Because the route is long and passes through several congested areas, even minor disruptions in one section quickly ripple across the entire line. The result is an unreliable journey for passengers who depend on the service to reach work and other important commitments.
From my experience, one of the most practical improvements would be to restructure the current route into shorter operational sections.
Suggested structural improvement
I would recommend dividing the existing route into two complementary segments:
- Section 1: Elephant and Castle to West Norwood (near the Norwood Bus Garage)
- Section 2: West Norwood to South Croydon
These services could operate with coordinated timings so passengers can connect easily at West Norwood. Breaking the route into two shorter sections would prevent delays in one area from disrupting the entire corridor and would allow TfL to manage reliability more effectively.
Alternative option: integrating the corridor into neighbouring routes
Another possible solution would be to consider removing the current route entirely and redistributing its function across existing routes that already operate in nearby corridors.
For example, certain services travelling from Brixton or Elephant and Castle could be slightly adjusted so that they terminate at, pass through, or connect with the Norwood Bus Garage area before continuing toward Croydon. Similarly, routes approaching from the Croydon side could be extended or rerouted to connect with West Norwood and the inner Southwark corridor.
This approach would create a network of shorter, more manageable routes rather than relying on a single long service that is vulnerable to disruption. Small route adjustments across several lines could maintain coverage while improving reliability for passengers.
Additional suggestions to improve passenger experience
- Better service regulation
- Long stops to “even out” buses are frustrating for passengers already on board. More responsive operational management could reduce these delays.
- Improved communication during disruptions
- Passengers are often left without any explanation when buses are delayed or diverted. Clear announcements or improved real-time updates would greatly improve passenger confidence.
- Improved management of driver changeovers
- Driver changes should ideally occur at depots or designated timing points rather than mid-route stops where they can cause extended delays.
- Better coordination of roadworks along the corridor
- Persistent roadworks frequently disrupt the route. Greater coordination between boroughs and TfL could help reduce overlapping disruptions.
The communities along this corridor depend heavily on bus transport. With thoughtful restructuring either through route segmentation or redistribution among existing routes the reliability of bus services between Elephant and Castle, Camberwell, West Norwood and South Croydon could be significantly improved.
I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this consultation and hope these suggestions will be considered as part of the Better Bus Southwark improvements.
